There was an unconfirmed report of loons, the observer thought PACIFIC LOONS, on Maxwell Refuge, north of Springer, Colfax County, on June 3. Hope someone can get over to check this record. Joyce Takamine reported a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER June 2 at the pond at the Green Chaparral Turf Ranch near Moriarty, Torrance County. Go five miles east on the north frontage road along I-40. This has been a quiet period; migration has settled down, and birds are busy with their domestic chores. A late OSPREY was along the Gila River near Silver City, Grant County, on May 27. Two ACORN WOODPECKERS were in Water Canyon west of Socorro on May 28. On May 25 a LEAST TERN was at Bosque del Apache Refuge, Socorro County, over the Middle Tour Loop, but missed on May 26. Also a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen there on May 15 at 8:15 p.m. at the southwestern corner of the south tour loop in the small channel next to the road. MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRDS were coming in reliably to the lookout tower on Signal Peak north of Pinos Altos, Grant County, May 24-25 with OLIVE WARBLERS and one GREATER PEWEE seen. Also a SPOTTED OWL was heard in the area on May 5. RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were at Clovis State Park in Curry County on May 22. The INCA DOVES were still at the Rose Gardens on Highland Street in Roswell, Chaves County, on May 18. The COMMON BLACK-HAWK was at the Glenwood Fish Hatchery, Catron County, on May 5. On April 28 a female THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was in the Zuni Mountains portion of the Cibola National Forest, McKinley County, on a burned area on Forest Road 178, 2.1 miles south of Forest Road 180. Randall Davey Audubon Center in Santa Fe plans a float trip on the Rio Chama on June 15 to 17. Call the center at 983-4609 for more details.
