[rec.birds] INDOOR: Parakeet divorce

sbishop@desire.wright.edu (06/06/90)

This is a plea for help from you parakeet breeders out there. I had to
separate my one and only breeding pair when the male tried to kill the female.
I heard all kinds of screeching coming from the cage and found the female half
dead and bloody. I immediately took the male out but am concerned since they
have a nest full of three half grown babies. I am not at home during the day
so hand feeding the babies is not an option. I hope I will go home tonight to
babies that have been fed by the mother but she looked quite ill this morning
so I am concerned.
Is this common? They have been together as a pair for several months and this
is their second successful hatching. They have fought from time to time but
never anything this serious.
The male seems to be glad to be out of the cage. Of course, he no longer has
to help feed the babies! But if the female can't seem to cope I am planning to
take her out and put him back in to see if he will feed them.
