I received my August issue of BIRDER'S WORLD today with a usual amount of excitement. I subscribe to several birding periodicals and BIRDER'S WORLD is my favorite or at least it was until I got a good look at the cover photo of this latest issue. The photo is of a brown pelican taken, according to the description inside, in La Jolla, California. The pelican was described as being in breeding plumage. I, too, have photographed brown pelicans in La Jolla, but not with the brilliant red, yellow, blue, and green hues evident on this particular bird. Was this photo enhanced for the "Dick Tracy" movie release? One of the principal reasons I subscribe to birding magazines is as a tool in continuing to learn about birds and their identifying markings. This particular cover photo would have made a striking cover without the added rainbow of colors. For anyone who hasn't been lucky enough to see this magnificent bird, it could have served to show a realistic image of a brown pelican. I feel better having gotten this off my chest. I would be interested to hear if anyone else is bothered by this.
