[rec.birds] INDOOR: Bird Medicine

whitling@andromeda.rutgers.edu.rutgers.edu (Donna Whitlinger) (07/21/90)

Yesterday, my gray cockatiel was diagnosed with an upper respiratory
infection. It's not real serious (yet, I suppose is proper here). He's
still very active and continues to eat anything he can get his beak into :-).
In fact the only symptoms are a few sneezes periodically.

Anyway, the problem is that the vet proscribed a liquid antibiotic (Bactrim?)
for him that I'm supposed to administer orally. This wouldn't be a problem
except that it tastes awful (I admit to sampling it) and Daniel won't take
it voluntarily (I don't blame him). I've been capturing him and holding him
in my hand while I squirt the medicine into his mouth. This makes for a
great wrestling match. It also makes for a stressed out bird and owner (to
say nothing about sticky). I don't see how I can manage to keep this up
twice a day for the next 9 days. My bird will hate me.

Does anyone have any hints on what I can do to make this easier on both
of us?

Daniel and I both say thanks in advance,

Donna Whitlinger
