[rec.birds] INDOOR: Question about getting a second bird

freds@legs.UUCP (Fred Sieg) (07/24/90)

Hello netters..

I have a couple of questions that I'm sure can be answered by many of
you.

We are owned by an umbrella cockatoo. Chantee is very affectionate,
quiet, and absolutely does not bite people. She is shy around strangers
but once she makes friends, it's forever. We have no other pets in the
house. The only experience with other animals is my son's dog. At first,
Chantee was frightened. Now she has been cautious but curious.

We are thinking of adding a bird buddy. My wife does not work, so it's
not a matter of solving loneliness for Chantee. We are in love with her
and wouldn't mind having more.

Our thoughts are:
	African Grey
	Mackaw
Cockatoo (either umbrella or a different type)

Our questions are:
What effect will it have on Chantee?
Is it possible that they will be enemies?
	Will we lose Chantee's affection?
Will she pick up bad habits?
Which is better/worse..another cockatoo or one of the others?

I'm sure you get the drift of our concerns. Any
advice/experience/warnings would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Fred
