Out berry-picking again yesterday with the family (2 buckets of
blueberries and 1/2 of raspberries...) at Cape St Francis (extreme
NE point of the Avalon Peninsula, north of St. John's). Signs of fall
are increasing around here: the starlings are massing in huge (500+)
flocks in the city. There were still 4 Gannets fishing off Cape St.
Francis yesterday, though, so winter's not here yet! I must get down
to the harbour and see if the Common Black-headed Gulls are still
here. Shorebirds are pouring through in large numbers, by all
accounts, but I haven't been able to get out shorebirding.
The big treat yesterday was a pair of acrobatic ravens flying in
formation, spiralling higher and higher before spilling the air from
their wings and tumbling straight down together. This went on for 15
minutes or so, with a lot of pretty hoarse gronking...
