Please send replies to UN106153@WVNVMS.WVNET.EDU. I am using a friend's account. Does anyone reading know of a newsgroup focused more on pet birds? My SO and I have a pair of cockatiels. We purchased each of the birds while my SO was in Florida working a temporary job. We are now together and after three months my bird doesn't like my SO and her bird doesn't like me. Does anyone have suggestions on improving the birds' dispositions? My bird runs away from my SO but her bird attacks me and her. My SO didn't have this biting problem with Melin until she came back. Melin also has a problem with the toilet - whenever it is flushed he starts screamming. The birds have separate cages and are allowed outside their cages about 5 hours a day. Merlin, my cockatiel, sneezes quite often. His nose however IS NOT runny. Should I be alarmed about this? Thank you Shane Saddler UN106153@WVNVMS.WVNET.EDU

In which case the bird will try to bite the other person, and sometimes bite the person they are sitting on. It's their way of keeping you in line. Pick up a BirdTalk magazine there are always a zillion articles in there talking about how to modify your birds behvior. You can do it. > Merlin, my cockatiel, sneezes quite often. Note: normals vets don't know much more about birds than you put flour on them before frying. There is probably not much wrong with your bird, but it always pays to get it looked at. -- Kurt Baumann InterCon Systems Corporation 703.709.9890 Creators of fine TCP/IP products 703.709.9896 FAX for the Macintosh.

I hate starting this whole thing again but the confusion expressed by the original poster is symptomatic of an uncalled-for anamosity in rec.birds and rec.pets over what used to be a non-issue. I have been reading both groups for quite some time now. When we first got our cockatoo I asked both groups where I should ask questions and was POLITELY referred to rec.birds with INDOOR on the header. Subsequently I asked a few questions, got some replies and even got in contact with others owned by a cockatoo :-) Nice situation, huh? I thought so! Then a few people in rec.birds started on tirades about pet bird people. Then a few people in rec.pets started on cat vs. dog folks. Now, people owned by birds have become paranoid about posting to rec.birds. I have tried posting to rec.pets. What happens? Basically nothing. No responses, since there everyone is interested in other pets. I have tried posting to rec.birds. What happens? Either nothing or referrals to rec.pets or flames. What happened to all the NICE folks that were happy to discuss pet birds? Neither group has SO much traffic that it's a bother to get some articles not interesting to you. Personally, I find them ALL interesting. Over the years I have had a variety of pets (dogs, cats, guinea pigs, snakes, rats) and currently have birds. I feed and am interested in the wild birds as well. I can't be the only one! Please, no flames. If you didn't like what I had to get off my mind, treat it like a pet bird article - ignore it! All that is asked is that you put INDOOR at the beginning of your subject line. I have learned much about my PET bird(s) in this notes group. There are some very helpful and experienced birders reading this group and they have helped me a lot. Then there is people like Mike who spend more time talking about who should post in this newsgroup than talking about the birds that we all love and read this newsgroup for :-( Anyway.... post to this group if you want good info on birds. I too am a person with many interests, and two overlapping ones are birds: i love to watch the ducks, Canadian geese and blue heron that live in the pond outside my window, and i love to play with my pet buggies. (And will with my soon-to-arrive baby cockateil.) I too would like a more focused group, but, I FIND THEM ALL INTERESTING: the bird"er" questions and the bird questions. Also... i never recieved ANY SORT of disclaimer when i subscribed to the group saying that it was only about outdoor birds -- i just landed in a raging debate, and stuck around to see the results. In the mean time i became interested in all the posts, so i am still here. I hope that this will be resolved SOON, so that those who are unhappy with the situation can once more smile. ...jones (fleming@sun.acsu.buffalo.edu) --

Please post only arcticles about birds, and not about rec.birds. Any article about what might be appropriate to post is FAR FAR LESS APPROPRIATE than would be any article about any kind of bird! This is a put-up job, isn't it? We just saw the gradual subsidence of a flame-war over this very topic. This group was originally intended for outdoor-type birdwatching, but it has some small traffic about indoor pursuits, usually labelled "INDOOR" in the topic line. There is a rec.pets group, but apparently birds do not figure largely in its bandwidth. I suggest you continue to post your questions here, but cross-post to rec.pets, and make sure to put the word "INDOOR" in your topic line....gotta go, now, and put on my asbestos underwear....
