[rec.birds] Earthwatch-endangered forest birds on Hawaii

bmann@desire.wright.edu (09/25/90)

I recently returned from a 2 1/2 week Earthwatch project on Hawaii working
with endangered forest birds, especially three species of honeycreepers.
This Earthwatch project will be repeated next year and is an excellent
opportunity for birders to be in areas that the general public has no
access to. It also is a chance for you to be involved in a project that
might possibly have a positive impact on the future survival of these
endangered species. Hawaii is a fascinating island. We lived in National
Park Service housing on the rim of Kilauea Caldera, saw 5 endangered species
and lots of others. Next year the project will probably involve banding
and tracking akiapola'au and Hawaiian creepers. I will be glad to e-mail
additional information to anyone who is interested.
