[rec.birds] INDOOR: My Fussy Cockatiel FINALLY Likes SOMETHING...

fleming@acsu.buffalo.edu (christine m fleming) (01/18/91)

I saw some of this product _Krazy Korn_ in the store, and in the hopes
that my Cockatiel and Parakeets would like something healthy i got
"Rainforest Rice Puddin'" and tried it out. (It is kind of easy to
deal with too because you just cook the package and then freeze it for
later (i used wax paper with a week's portion, and then froze the
packets in resealable bags).) Well, the parakeets wouldn't go near the
stuff (as usual) but, Rutger (the Cockatiel) LOVES it. He usually HATES
bananas, and eats the ones in this mix. It also has corn, green peas,
rice, pastaccio nuts, rasins, powdered milk and allspice. I suppose
that it could be homemade as well... (Although, with a five dollar
bag, two portions a day, he will be eating the stuff well into the
Fall, so it isn't that expensive...)

Now... does anyone have a way of convincing parakeets that that stuff
in the feed bowl is food, and not some weird substance out to get
them??? ...:) One down, two to go....

As for the store that i got the food in, well, i don't know if a lot
of bird shops are like this one, but, i was so amazed. I've never seen
birds in a store that looked happy (i HATE all those Dr. X (and other
clone places) that i see, but, can't not go in and see the poor birds
that they have... (especially "nice" are the mislabled and mis-fed
birds: is it even possible to get lories to eat SEEDS???)...) Well,
this one was different. The birds lived out of their cages (for the
most part) on a huge jungle gym in the middle of the store. I got to
see my first (pardon my spellings...:) Hycynth Macaw, who was a doll.
They also had a really spunky Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, two Goffin's (?),
a pair of Electus (these were really neat: the male sat sooo still, he
didn't look real, and then he would whistle when your back was
turned...:), and a bunch of baby Blue Fronts and others... All in all
it was quite an interesting visit. Sean and i really liked their
African Grey, who was sweet, and a little shy... very gentle, and
intelligent. It was really nice to see a store that took care, and
loved their birds. Are there any that are similiar to this one that i
could visit in the Buffalo area? (This one was near Albany.)
