[rec.birds] Coots - To Know One Is to Love One

gwynne@milton.u.washington.edu (Kristan Geissel) (02/13/91)

Ok, folks, I know most of you must know what a coot is or at
least wondered what that ugly black waterbird with red eyes and white
beak really was. But what I want to know now is what anyone knows
about them aside from what the bird guides say.
The desire for knowledge is purely personal. I had a coot
adopt me in the winter of 88/89. He came back in 89/90 with a wife.
I recognized him by the way he skittered across the water towards me.
like the year before. He and I have spent many happy lunch hours
sitting on an old boat house side by side in the sun. His wife is none
too happy about this relationship, harping at him whenever I feed him
but he ignores her. I really want to know how long I can expect this
connection with this delightful bird to last.
Let me know what you know.
