[rec.birds] INDOOR: Eucalyptus???

llovero@bbn.com (Linda Lovero) (03/07/91)

Thanks to all who responded to my concern about my cockatiel laying
eggs. Kiwi only laid two eggs this time and is back to her normal
feisty self. It was a little strange that she waited until she was
in our bedroom and deposited the second egg right in the middle of the
floor! Very different from tearing up paper for the first egg and
attending to it aggressively.

Now I have another question. I hear that eucalyptus is good for birds
to chew on, however, I don't ever see it in a pet shop. I see it
in supermarkets and florists and wonder if it's safe to buy it from there.
Do they normally spray anything on the eucalyptus to preserve it? The
leaves seem to have a white powdery coating and I don't know if this
occurs when it grows naturally.

Does anyone know if the tops of pineapples are hazardous to birds? I have
a few that I've planted in some pots.

Thanks again,

Linda
