As one of the sidelights to the announcement of UNIX System V, someone asked what happened to System IV. In answer to this, System IV was an internal product only, which was a direct extension from the System III software made available last year. It offered significant performance improvements over System III; particularly for the VAX family. System V follows from System IV with similar performance improvements, new features, and bug fixes.
