amg@cs.cmu.edu (Ann Marie Grizzaffi Maynard) (03/29/91)

Thanks to all who wrote! In addition to the humorous and informative
post(s) seen here, the following are some excerpts from personal replies I
received--lifted with my mouse for anyone interested...

The Wilderness Society:

*************************

Here is a succinct description of their purpose from
their quarterly magazine (It's quite good) :

The Wilderness Society, founded in 1935, is a non-profit membership
organization devoted to preserving wilderness and wildlife, protecting
America's prime forests, parks, rivers, deserts, and shorelands, and
fostering an American land ethic."

They are primarily concerned with preserving public lands by lobbying
congress and molding public opinion.

*************************

As to the Wilderness Society, it has
a rep for being more confrontational than Sierra Club, mor involved
in vigourous lobbying (if that's possible). It has worked especially
hard on saving old-growth forests in the Northwest and Alaska. It
is a respected lobbying group and has joined forces with Sierra
Club and Nature Conservancy on some issues: neither of those 2
solid groups has challenged its legitimacy. In short, I'd say a
good organization, but a trifle militant.

Defenders of Wildlife

*************************

Defenders of Wildlife is an organization dedicated to protecting the integrity
and diversity of natural ecosystems through its work to restore threatened
habitats and wildlife populations.
They concentrate alot of their resources on " North American" animals and
their problems. Restoring wolves to Yellowstone and their native habitats.
I can't remember the exact figures, but I really researched how various
wildlife organizations spent their money and Defenders is the one that
most impressed me.

*************************

I use to belong to Defenders of Wildlife. Their main objective is to
use the attornies and the legal action to "Defend" our wildlife.
