[rec.birds] Getting history of banded Canada geese?

tirone@acsu.buffalo.edu (stephen t tirone) (04/16/91)

While birding this weekend I saw a couple of Canada Geese with
neck bands. They were close enough for me to get the numbers off
them. As I understand it, I can write to the US Fish and Wildlife
Service with the info I have, and some time later I might receive a
report on the movements of these two birds.

I get the impression that this takes some time. Does anyone
out there know if there is a quicker way to get the info? I'm just
wondering if I can get the info before mid-May, so I can share it with
the folks in my intermediate birding class before it ends.

Quite a few Canadas out there (25,000? -- Iroquois NWR, western
New York), plus one lost blue-phased Snow Goose...

Speaking from experience, this can take a while. The most
beneficial info you can get, though, is who banded the birds. This way,
you can contact the banders directly and report your sighting. They will
appreciate it, and will (most likely) be willing to send you periodic
updates concerning the birds you sighted. Good luck!
