It seems that one of the principal arguments against moderated groups is the fear that the moderator will inflict too much of his own personality upon the group. Whether this is desirable or not is an arguable point (some of the ARPA mailing list moderators do and it works out well) but this is a valid point of discussion. Most of the fears about mod.fascism could be alleviated by allowing multiple moderators for a group. If a posting is rejected by one moderator, it could be re-submitted to another for inclusion. If the news software were to allow multiple moderators there might be less argument against the moderated groups. (Maybe it already does?) The issue remains, however, of getting moderators. With the proper tools, moderating a group should take only a little more effort than reading the group. If these tools could be made available (I'm sure they exist--moderators must have created some by now) more people might be willing to be moderators (I know that I would). -paul asente asente@Cascade.ARPA decwrl!Glacier!Cascade!asente
