Given the 8" and the clear whistled song, I'd have guessed a Baltimore Oriole. Second Year males can be extremely variable in plumage--but nearly always (always?) have some black on their throat. The "females" pictured in field guides are really fall young. In the field, females are generally not distinguishable from SY males. Bullock's oriole would be quite rare that far east--but have you looked at the picture in your bird guide? Again, SY males have black on their throats as do most adult females; the song that you describe sounds more like Baltimore. -- Name: Jim Rising Mail: Dept. Zoology, Univ.
