[rec.birds] Parakeet Breeding Problem

ltaylor@HQ.Ileaf.COM (Laura Taylor) (06/05/91)

Recently, I added a female parakeet who had just laid 3 fertilized eggs
(she had been in a colony with a male) to my one lonely older female who
had been totally miserable ever since her female buddy died a couple months
ago. So far the two birds are getting along very well, and my original
bird has perked up incredibly. I put the three fertilized eggs in the nesting
box, however, the new bird that laid them has shown little interest in
sitting on them. I'm told that this is probably the case due to the fact
that she and her eggs were moved from one cage to another. I am wondering how
long these eggs can go without being sat on, and if placing a heating pad
on the bottom side of the box, underneath the wood, would be of any use.
I know that the eggs will definitely last a few days without being sat on,
but does anyone know for sure just how long that period is?

Also, does anyone have any experience with incubating parakeet egges themself?
