[rec.birds] INDOOR: Pine Cones

fleming@acsu.buffalo.edu (christine m fleming) (06/05/91)

Are Pine Cones safe for parrots? I have seen adverts. for products
that have pinecones in them, but, are these certain types of pine
cones? How should i make sure they are clean, without washing them?
Are there any "pine nuts" in pine cones, or are these from something
other than a pinetree?

Also, does someone have a list of common trees that are safe for
parrots? I got my cockatiel a hardwood branch (you know, the type that
starts with an 'm' that i could NEVER spell...:) and he loves it, but,
i thought he may get more pleasure out of one he can actually shred
and chew into bits and pieces...:)

Thanks...

We haven't given our birds pine cones but they LOVE to chew on the
following types of branches:

	all kinds of eucalyptus
	citrus
	apple
	birch
	bay laurel

With birch and eucalyptus, we include any seed pods that are
attached to the branches.

p.s. We have cockatiels and a blue and gold macaw.
