The November 22, 1982 issue of ELECTRONICS NEWS contains an announcement of "UNIX system V" for 11s and VAXen. Said to be available in first quarter with AT&T software support?! Anyone know more about this? Mark Swanson ...decvax!genradbolton!grkermit!marks

Wan" <wan.gatech@Udel-Relay> Date: 2 Dec 82 23:31:44-EST (Thu) The December 1 issue of MIS Week also contains an article about "UNIX 5"; it was titled "AT&T Readies Release of 'More Efficient' UNIX". Supposedly, UNIX V would be available to OEM's in January, 1983. This release would be targeted toward 16- and 32-bit processors, and the following processors were mentioned specifically in the article: Motorola 68000, Intel 8086 and 8088, and 16-bit Zilog. Among the improvements cited were those to performance, file system maintenance, communications [interprocess?], and screen editing/text processing. Licensing plans and pricing schedules would be released in January, and a standard-terms contract is supposed to be introduced. I suspect that there may be some kind of information about it in the January meeting of UNICOM in San Diego. One reason cited for the release of this version to OEM distributors is that they will be able to provide user-friendly applications to fit on top of the operating system. "Operating systems are not made to be user-friendly, nor should they really be so," someone was quoted to say. "Operating systems are written for programmers and they should make the applications user- friendly." Hmm....
