Hey now,
Okay, I've been seeing this beastie for months now all over
Northern California (South San Francisco Bay, Modesto in the
central valley, and Sonora in the Sierra foothills) The closest
thing I can find in the guides I have (an old Petersen and a new
Audobon. Can anyone give me a physical description of the mythical
National Geographic guide? I was told by folks on this group that
it's commonly used in this part of the world, but I have yet to see
it in a store...) is a Chestnut Backed Chickadee. Here's the
description:
Back and wings look like sparrow markings, but with patches of
rust, and a rust cap. White line on either side of neck (like a
ring, but only on sides) gray breast with black bib ala chickadee.
They're the right size and shape for the chickadee, but the
description and pictures in the guides just don't match well enough
to convince me.
Thanks to anyone who can help me out here. email is best.
