The sad time has come to part from my Mephisto chess computers; these two machines have given me many fine games, almost always beating me handily. The first is a solid-wood, hand-crafted set, beautiful pieces with a pullout drawer containing the controls. It looks like a beautiful set ordinarily, but the pullout drawer turns it into a very challenging opponent: the Mephisto Exclusive. The second is a portable, very flat. It is originally rated, one of the actual machines used in the testing tournament that scored a USCF 2154 (strong expert) for the subsequently release product line. Thus, there is no doubt about the of this machine. It plays subtly, with plans that are sometime so gradual it is hard to distinguish its quiet intentions. This is the legendary Mephisto Mondial. Best offer gets each machine. The offers will probably be fairly high since these are the best in the business. Bid now and reserve your Mephisto!! Stuart Cracraft (714-631-7452)

I have lost track of which is which with Mephisto these days. I was running the Roma in the little (non-wood) board at work, just to save desk-space and money; they have three different boards, and who-knows-how-many modules, with prices varying from a couple hundred to a few thousand dollars. On the whole a very effective implementation. [Flaw: Roma program/hardware (68xxx) requires a bigger power supply, so it plugs right into the module up front. Looks bad and gets in the way, at least on the low-end board] Just for reference, I'm no longer employed by Heuristic Software as of this afternoon. Does that mean that now I'll say all the awful things about Saitek products that I've always wanted to in the past? I thought I'd already said them...
