What does the rc stand for in .cshrc, .mailrc, etc?

What we need now is net.unix.hist for the exploration of the
history of Unix (tm). Somebody out there must know what virtually
all those odd names represent.

I hate to be the purveyor of boring news, but the rc stands for
"run commands". I guess lately it has come to mean any file that
contains info used to set options for program xxx at startup, not
necessarily commands.

rc stands for RunCom.
