" OUT OF BOUNDS"
The procedure outlined below will allow you to stretch the frequency
limits of the venerable Bearcat BC-250. You can store these frequencies
in the normal memory banks and scan them. Remember that the sensitivity
of the scanner drops off as you get away from the design limits of the
radio. This procedure was published many years ago in what I think is Scan
Magazine. Standard disclaimer applies.
Suppose, for this example, that you wanted to monitor a frequency above the
174 MHz band edge. SEARCH a small area near the upper* edge of the band, for
instance 173-173.9 MHz. Open the squelch to stop the search, then enter that
frequency into the STORE memory using the LOCKOUT. For this example we will say
the frequency is 173.8 MHz. Set up SEARCH limits for less* than the STORED
frequency. Push MANUAL then RECALL. Note that 173.8 will be displayed. Now
SEARCH upward* from there. The BC-250 will go on past the 174 MHz band edge.
When you reach the frequency that you desire, open the squelch to stop SEARCH.
SLOW speed search is very helpful here. You will now have displayed your
chosen frequency. We'll assume it's 179.75 MHz. Press the LOCKOUT button to
enter this frequency into the STORE memory.
To enter this frequency into a regular channel, first select a channel.
Then, using the RECALL. retrieve the desired frequency. Now turn the BC-250 OFF
then ON again. 179.75 will be stored in the non-volatile memory and can be
scanned as usual.
