The March 1989 _RF Design_ has an article called "A Microwave Oven to Amateur TV Transmitter Conversion". No, he's not kidding. It's a microwave oven with the magnetron cathode current modulated by a pair of 6JE6s, a power FET and an opamp, producing 250 watts of FM video in the amateur 2.39-2.45 GHz band. A modified MDS TV downconverter (like terrestrial HBO receivers) or modified TVRO unit is used to receive. The modulator sits where the food used to go. Obviously not one to fool around with if you don't know what you're doing, plus a microwave spectrum analyzer appears to be necessary, but it is the most original project I've seen in awhile. -- Mike Butts, Research Engineer KC7IT 503-626-1302 Mentor Graphics Corp., 8500 SW Creekside Place, Beaverton OR 97005 ...!{sequent,tessi,apollo}!mntgfx!mbutts OR mbutts@pdx.MENTOR.COM These are my opinions, & not necessarily those of Mentor Graphics.
