[net.unix-wizards] Availability of C and/or UNIX for IBM 4341?

Does there exist UN*X for the IBM 4341? I'm pretty sure that there
are C compilers for that machine, but I don't know where they could
be obtained. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who knows the answer
to either question.

Amdahl's UTS is UNIX-on-VM. It is expensive.
Does anyone on Usenet currently use it?

TUCC (Triangle Universities Computation Center) tried it
two years ago, but cancelled the project in favor of a huge MVS/TSO system.
The project head was Steve Bellovin (unc!smb still works),
with Dennis Rockwell (mcnc!dennis) and myself (duke!trt) part time.
The following info is about 2 years old, but I bet it is still valid.

UTS is half-duplex, its biggest problem.
Its other big problem is that it runs under VM
which is a 20% cpu slowdown unless you have less than 2 Mbytes of primary
in which case it is a 60% IO slowdown (1 or 2 users!).
A 4341 group 2 with 4+ Mbytes supports about 2/3 as many people
as the same machine running CMS/VM.
These are mostly guesses, for more info contact unc!smb.

Yes, there is in fact a C370 compiler that runs under VM/CMS, and I'm told
that Amdahl actually has ported Unix to the 4341 architecture and has it
running under VM. (i.e. it would be VM/UNIX as opposed to VM/CMS). For
those who don't know, Amdahl is the company that makes IBM lookalikes (same

architecture as the old 370, and hence upwards compatable to 4341s).

I have been using Amdahl's UTS on an IBM 3081 (and have used it on
a 3033). While this is a fair size bigger than the 4341, I think that
it's safe to say that it is still more productive to use UTS on a 4341
than CMS; it certainly is more productive on a 3033. UTS does work a lot
better if you're using mostly full-screen devices - 3278's or the Yale
Series/1 emulations. Amdahl has recently installed paging in a new
(Version 2) release of UTS. We should be getting V2.0 here at P.U.
pretty soon and I'll let you know how it goes -- I'm responsible for
dealing with UTS around here. It is pretty expensive, by the way --
$10,500 per year for Educational use, $15,000 (I think) for commercial
use. I wish I could get the Amdahl people onto the net.

Amdahl has a port of version 7 to IBM 4341's under VM. They call
their Unix "UTS" (Universal Timesharing System). It leases for
$15000/yr to commercial customers, $10000 to Universities.

At the Boston Usenix meeting AT&T publicly announced the
availability of Unix/370. I believe this is what you have in mind.

So, tell me ...

How does one allocate a Partitioned Data Set in Unix?
What is the syntax of the C-Shell's JCL?
Is there a termcap entry for 3270 series display stations?

ianj (12/17/82)

UNIX/370 developed at BTL runs on most IBM processors,
from the 4341 to the 3033AP (soon on the 3081).
UNIX/370 equivalent to SYSTEM III is available from
AT&T thru usual license arrangements.

I can post more details if anyone is interested.
