When I was at Dayton this year, I saw a book by H.P Maxim (ARRL founder) that was a real interesting piece of work. It was a bona-fide crackpot tome about using radio to communicate with extra-terrestrials! The book detailed some of Maxim's far-out philosophy, and was a real eye-opener concerning the "eclectic" interests of "our founder." Anyone else run across this? I think it was titled something like "Worlds Beyond", although this recollection is vague. Many of you may be surprised to learn that Hiram Percy Maxim, son of Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim was also the inventor of the world's first practical firearm silencer. His father, H.S. Maxim was the inventor of the first machine gun. His father's invention saw extensive use in the hands of the Germans in WW1 in the form of the MG08. Son Hiram P's invention was very popular with farmers, ranchers and mobsters until 1934 at which time Federal Law in the US made possession of his inventions and his father's inventions subject to federal registration. Hiram P's uncle, Hudson Maxim, was the inventor of smokeless gunpowder, the self propelled torpedo, and a number of other explosive devices. -- Richard Crisp crisp@mips.com MIPS Computer Systems !decwrl!mips!crisp 928 Arques MS 2-02 (408) 524-8177 Sunnyvale, Ca 94086
