[att.sys.pc6300] Problem with RLL upgrade.

I have recently attempted to upgrade my Xerox 6064 (a.k.a. ATT6300)
with a 30 Meg hard disk. The computer is equipped with ROM BIOS
version 1.43. The drive is a Seagate ST-238 with a Western Digital
RLL controller. The drive was checked by the dealer and formatted
with IBM DOS 3.1. When I initially accessed the drive, a "DIR" stated
that I had the expected 32,XXX,XXX bytes free. I went through the
reformatting procedure outlined in the XEROX documentation to
install their version of MS-DOS 3.1. This included a physical
format, paritioning and DOS formatting. The drive was partitioned
as a single drive. A display of the partition configuration
states that the disk is 32 Meg. When I boot this version of DOS
and do a "DIR" it claims I have only 21,XXX,XXX bytes free.
WHERE DID THE OTHER 10 MEGABYTES GO !!!
The IBM DOS recognized the full capacity of the disk, yet the
XEROX MS-DOS 3.1 does not. What gives ? As far as I can tell,
I didn't commit any cockpit error, so I'm wondering about how
DOS handles the differences between RLL and MFM encoding.
