Do any engineers out there (or anyone else) know the current FCC position on setting technical standards? Is the FCC mandated by law to set technical standards such as HDTV or can the FCC simply let broadcasters choose any HDTV transmission standard they want? (I understand that a production standard is a completely different story.) I had always assumed that it was the FCC's responsibility to set these standards, but the case of AM stereo seems to suggest dif- ferently (although maybe the fact that stereo was only a modification of the existing system made a difference; if so, then maybe the FCC will allow any NTSC-compatible HDTV system to fight it out in the marketplace). -- Dr. Bruce C.
