[rec.video] Panasonic AG-1830 comments, anyone?

jet@karazm.math.uh.edu (J. Eric Townsend) (07/21/90)

I'm about to purchase an AG-1830 to use with my amiga for slow-scan
digitizing (the 1830 has a true digital freeze) and recording anims
to tape (time to hack together an edit-sync controller for the serial
port).

Anyone care to comment on the good/bad points of this unit, or suggest
a similar but cheaper/better unit? I'm trying to stay under $1-1.2K.

Thanks.

I own an AG-1830 for playing, an AG-1960 for edit/recording, and a Future
Video EC-1000Pro edit controller. I use this setup for editing SVHS
tapes.

The 1830 does have some digital image capabilities - freeze, multiscreen,
posterization, mosiac. But these are FIELD effects and there is no
interpolation to fill in the missing lines. In other words, every other
line is blank when you activate PAUSE or other digital function. This
may or may not be a problem to you. Occasionally, I'll employ an image
freeze or multiscreen in one of my productions. When I make such a
recording, the problem is not really obvious on short scenes, but long
sequences, that may be another story.

Realize that for recording animation, you need frame accurate editing
control. The 1830 passes one pulse per 5 frames to the controller,
while the AG-1960 passes one pulse per frame and is thus more accurate.
Future Video offers a time code option which does give frame accurate
editing.
