[tor.news] Pathalias strangeness

dan@maccs.UUCP (Dan Trottier) (12/10/87)

Well I've finally installed Pathalias version 9 and created a new paths
database from the recent maps. All went fine except one minor annoyance.

We have a file called Local that we pass along to pathalias which defines
paths local to our site and not to be made public. In this file I have
a line which redefines the BITNET gateway. With the previous set of maps
everything worked fine. For some reason unknown to me the redefinition
of the BITNET gateway no longer works!

This is the site that is becoming the BITNET forwarder instead of site xxxxx.

My question is: Why?

Our BITNET forwarder is not far away and the link is *faster* than the one
to super.super.org. Is there a change I can make to our Local file that will
in fact fix the problem?

I haven't examined the root of the problem that you are having at all (I had
the same trouble as you are having) but the problem seems to be the quotes
around the domain. I think that you will probably find that, if you were to
put quotes around the domain in your "Local" file, your "xxxxxx" will probably
be the BITNET gateway selected by pathalias. I haven't actually verified this
but the quotes seemed to be the only unusual thing about the info for the
gateway that the previous version of pathalias chose for me (pathalias takes
soooooo long to run on these tiny 16-bit machines [with the port of pathalias
which uses files instead of vast memories])

P.S. Has anybody ported the latest pathalias (Version 9) to 16-bit environment
yet? Unfortunately, I have very little time to do any substantial work on
the News software.
