Various people, including me, have been muttering for a long time about the need to revise the Toronto-area news topology to make it a bit more sensible. There are going to have to be some feed changes in the vicinity of U of T quite soon anyway, so this seems like a good time for it. If you've wondered why your news systems got a "sendsys" control message from Geoff Collyer recently, it's because I've asked him to map the current topology so we know where we're starting from. Until that's done, all I can say about possible revisions is the obvious: sites which are willing and able to be major hubs should get preference for feeds direct from the sites that run the long-distance links, and "leaf" sites that don't feed anybody else should be out on the periphery, so we can keep the feed paths short. Since this has to be a cooperative operation -- news feeds ultimately are decided by the people at either end, and no central person can do more than offer advice -- I'm open to suggestions, and I'll try to keep folks posted on what's planned. -- Sendmail is a bug, | Henry Spencer at U of Toronto Zoology not a feature. | uunet!attcan!utzoo!henry henry@zoo.toronto.edu
