[net.unix-wizards] dirvish, an interactive dirtree style shell

gnu (01/14/83)

We received a program from the Xanadu folks called dirvish yesterday,
which does a sideways dirtree in three columns but lets you move around in
it with the cursor keys, automatically expands directories that you sit on
for a second, lets you move files around interactively in the graphical
structure, and lets you type shell commands and insert file names by
pointing at them and hitting tab. It uses a couple of graphics features of
the Sun (to draw boxes around the elements of the current pathname in the
directory, etc) but would probably not be hard to port to dumb terminals.

With a mouse it would be about 10x as useful, but for people stuck without
mice it's a nice tool.

It's for sale. I don't know what they want for it (ours was an evaluation
copy) but you can find out from Roger Gregory at XOC: PO Box 7615, Ann Arbor,
MI, 48107. (313) 663-3637.
