[rec.pets] Canaries

I inherited a 14 yr. old canary last December. He looks like the standard
yellow variety you see in pet stores. The owner assured me he was
not long for this world. The poor fellow has crippled feet and can no
longer grip his perch, he just hops around on the bottom of his cage.
I was not able to keep him (due to allergies) and convinced my sister to
adopt him with the same promise of his impending death.

This bird exhibits NO signs of giving up the ghost and eats an incredible
amount of food (fresh and seed) each day. Additionally he has started to sing
again. (The original owner says he stopped singing about 2 years ago.) My
sister has renamed him "The bird that won't die". :-)

What is the life expectency of canaries?
