Is there anyone out there who can answer the following questions with certainty: (1) Is a *binary* Unix license adequate for getting BSD unix? (2) When you get a Unix System III license, is it for a particular machine class (Vax, 68000, pdp-11) or does it give you the "right" to get Unix software for any processor? Thanks. aron shtull-trauring harpo!seismo!presby!aron

Aron, In response to presby.170: A *binary* UNIX license is adequate for getting BSD only if it is a binary license based upon 32v, System III or System IV. (I don't know of any 32v redistribution agreements, however.) As far as System III licenses for a particular machine class, a license (any UNIX license) is not for a particular machine class but for a particular machine. You could license your Cray-1 for UNIX Version 6. The license implies what software you can run on what machine. When ordering System III/IV, the distinctions between machines are used to help them determine which tapes and boot instructions to send you. Hope this helps. aps.
