Recent postings in wreck.audio have asked about the useful life or recording tape. I ran across this reference to a National Bureau of Standards report and thought it might help answer the questions. I am cross posting this message to comp.misc since the same information will apply to diskettes. Most magnetic audio (and computer) tape and floppy disks use a polyester base which is coated with appropriate magnetic particles; Dupont's mylar (reg) is a polyester. Cellulose acetate tape is not in common use any more. I do not have a copy of this report, so don't ask me for details: NBS Internal Report 83-2750. Brown, D. W., Lowry, R. E., Smith, L. E. "Prediction of the Long-Term Stability of Polyester-Based Recording Media" 1983 August. 27p. Available from NTIS; PB 83-261891. ----------------- | ___ ________ | | | / / | | Dr. Barry L.
