Subject: Administrivia: the archive server

The archive server seems to be working satisfactorally, but there are two
things I want to mention about it.

First, everyone please disregard the copyright notice that appeared at the
top of the retrieved messages. It incorrectly stated that the information
in the message was copyrighted by the Usenet Community Trust. ALL
information in the archives---the icons, the Sun-Spots issues, and the
sources---are in the public domain unless they explicitly state otherwise.
The copyright notice was inserted by the original author of the archive
server for his own archives, but the copyright is not applicable to the
information in our archives. The server no longer prepends the notice.

Second, the server rejects mail that looks like it came from usernames
such as "daemon", "root", "mailer-daemon", and unfortunately, "system".
If any of these substrings appear in your "From:" line, the system will
never process your message. I will very likely remove the string "system"
from this list in the near future, since it has caused a great deal of
inconvenience.

Subject: Re: disks and message from C. Hedrick

Well, I must take exception to a couple of points you made in your
Sun-Spots submission. Although older studies may have shown that the swap
partition was the most heavily used, I don't believe that is the case
anymore. The reason is the invention of the ZMAGIC a.out format (demand
load). With this format, the text portion is loaded in from where ever it
resides on disk (would seem to make the sticky bit not-very-useful). I'm
not sure what happens to the data segment, I suppose that it is still
allocated in the swap area. Also, if you have lots of memory, the swap
area gets less and less frequently accessed. Since both of these are
modern trends (i.e. ZMAGIC and more memory), it would seem to at least
partially invalidate your assumption (based on presumably older machine
archetectures).

Also, although it is true that I/O bandwidth will not be increased by
adding an extra disk, I/O throughput MAY be increased due to the support
of overlapping seeks (I believe as of Sun OS 3.2). This won't do much,
but it helps a little (basically, like having an extra set of independent
heads on one disk drive).

Anyway, I don't know the real answers. We do the same as you, split up
the file systems and nd partitions to be under as many different
controllers (and disks) as possible. Obviously, splitting up by
controller is the big win...

Subject: Re: STC tape controller for Suns

You have at least 2 alternatives.

1. AVIV (in Boston and possibly other places) makes a controller board
for STC drives (other people may as well; this is the only one I
know of). It is currently a Multibus board and uses a standard
adapter, but I hear rumours that they will have a VME interface out
in the not-too-distant future. The driver is the problem here. At
the moment the only one available is from Brown University, and you
must have a source licence from AT&T to get it (and then they send
it on tape :-). We have installed it here but have not yet had much
chance to test it. I have heard from some other people that while
it works it is not as functional as the Pertec driver that comes with
the Sun software. I have been told by AVIV that they are working on
their own driver (possibly to be released with their VME board?).
We have not found any problems at all with the hardware part.

2. The other alternative is to go with the standard Pertec Xylogics
board and driver. It is possible to change a few boards in the tape drive
and add a convertor on the back (to modify the signals?), and then it
will talk Pertec instead of STC. I know that Systems Industries (for
one) sells Fujitsu tape drives (normally STC) with these adaptors
pre-fitted, but I do not know how much it costs or even if it can
   be bought separately.

AVIV also sells switch boxes that will allow you to share the same STC tape
drive with VAXes (or other Suns), which is how we have our system set up.
It works very well.

Subject: tar tape troubles

I recently upgraded from a Sun 2-120 to a 3-160. During this transfer I
put my files on 1/4in SCSI tape. Now I have succeeded in messing up my
most valuable tape!

I created the tape on the Sun 2-120 using the commands:

cd /usr2
tar cf /dev/rst0 .

and this worked fine.

When it came time to put them on the 3, I used
cd /usr2
tar cf /dev/rst0

(without the period)
Spot the (far from) deliberate mistake!
This terminated quickly, but not before writing a marker at the beginning
of the tape. (Of course, the tape was not write-protected, why bother
with these childish precautions.) Now I cant read the tape.

Does anyone know anyway I can get at least some of the files from the tape
(I don't actually need the first few) The people at Sun don't seem to be
able to help. Failing that, are there contractors etc who might be able
to help (I presume the NSA could do it, but apart from them...)

Thanks,
Bernard Silver

The Sun X server would automagically support this if we could convince our
MIP-512 driver to work with the suntools library. (It works fine with
just pixrects, and implements the FBIOGETTYPE ioctl, even though Suntools
claims it doesn't) Apparently there are some 'dd' routines (SunCore
device drivers, perhaps?) that are needed as well, and we couldn't find
documentation on what you REALLY needed for SunView support.

Has anybody been able to write a driver for a non-Sun frame buffer that
works with SunView? How will this all be affected by NeWS? (does the
NeWS server just use the pixrect library?)
