[net.music] Todd and Utopia

Somebody asked about Todd/Utopia.

I saw Todd and Utopia at the Orphaeum in Boston along with the Tubes (In May?).
The Tubes were billed as the main attraction but I only went to see Utopia.
Utopia stole the show. They were fantastic!! (As for the tubes....too
many gadgets for me...does every song have to have a gimic? They did do
some good stuff but not 1 to 1.5 hours worth.)

As for what they are up to.....I had read an interview in some pub that said
if this new Utopia record "Point of View" was not a smash then that would be
it for the band as we know it today. This bothered me because I had purchased
the record and did not think it should be the make or break record for Utopia.
The record is good but if you don't know or care about Utopia you probably
wouldn't buy this record. So if what I read was true then Utopia is soon to
be defunct. I hope not but then when this interview took place the band members
might have just been in a TEMPORARY state of depression.

As for Todd himself....He had been having trouble with Bearsville over one
of his solo efforts "Acappella". They refused to market it so it was put on the
back burner for some time (time unknown). I have not heard this record but a
friend was telling me it is Todd and effects...no guitar, no drums, just Todd
and a Fairlight (plus other black boxes I'm sure). I guess he uses the
fairlight to make all his instrumental sounds with his voice. My friend
says it is great...(I wonder where he heard it). I'll buy it when I find it!

Todd has since signed with Warner bros for three new records and the "Acappella"
record. So if not Utopia, we are sure to have Todd.
