The first is from Sun with their VME-Multibus board and has a single super-eagle on it. The second has an adaptor board from AVIV and is running a single eagle and two M2344K's. We have had no problems other than the number of dip switches/jumpers to configure between the VME adaptor/XY-451/Disk drives. A look at /sys/sundev/xyreg.h shows that there are two bits allocated for xyunit in the xyiopb structure. We assumed that 4 units were okay. The only reason you are limited to 2 drives on the Sun XY-451 is that they are using non-SMD cables and there is only really room for two data cables on the back of their adaptors. The AVIV adaptors (AVIV Corp, 26 Cummings Park, Woburn, MA 01801 617/933-1165) are fine. The only really messy part is that, by the time you get one SMD control cable and 4 SMD data cables coming out of the VME backplane you can lose the use of the slot to the right of the XY-451. These disks are served to 6 diskless workstations and NFS mounted to 2-4 non Sun systems and we have never had a problem. Assuming user foo, if I type ls ~fo<esc> csh will complete to ls ~foo I will now type return. Nothing happens. I do not get an ls of ~foo. If I do an ls /user/foo everything works. This bug is a bit interittent and only happens on cliets. My guess is that csh is being somewhat confused by yellow pages and never bothers to fork ls. Also once the problem occurs, even ls ~foo will not work even if I don't use file name completion. Therefore, what I will get is % ls ~fo<esc> # csh expands fo to foo % ls ~foo % ls /user/foo mbox file1 file2 % Michael DeCorte // (315)268-3704 // P.O. Sometimes it tells me that "valloc" >failed. Sometimes there are problems with "pix_rect", sometimes with >/dev/fb. The messages refer to the fact that screendump and/or rasfilter8to1 are attempting (and failing) to allocate enough memory to hold temporary copies of the image you wish to print. "valloc" is (I assume) the virtual memory allocation routine, a "pix_rect" (or pixrect) is a pixel rectangle: a buffer for holding your iamge, and /dev/fb is the frame buffer device which holds the pixels displayed on your screen. Screendump makes a copy of the frame buffer, and requires 1152x900 bytes (the use of rasfilter8to1 means you must have 8 bit color images). rasfilter8to1 converts the color image (1152x900 bytes) to a monochrome one (1152x900 bits, 129600 bytes) and sends it to the printer via lpr. The bottom line is that the user logged in via the terminal is using up some space in your swap volume, and the image processing commands cannot run. The solution: keep them from logging in (not a good solution), or allocate a larger swap partition. On this sun-3 standalone machine under 3.[2-5] the problem has been quite reproducible. If I type % ls ~bil<ESC><CR> the shell completes "bil" to "bill", but I get no output. (Lastcomm shows that ls was executed.) Also, from then on I get no output from any command that uses "~username", even if I don't invoke completion. Eventually the problem goes away, I'm not sure why. It looks to me like csh got its fds scrambled. Warsaw) Subject: Contribution: Interactive Color Editor Here's my contribution to sunspots. Its an Interactive Color Editor, or ICE. This is version 1.1, a standalone suntool that works on 3/160C, 3/110C and 3/60C machines with OS 3.3 and up. Here's a brief explanation: ICE is a tool that allows users to select color rgb triplets, called chips. It is designed to run under SunView and utilizes the three button mouse. ICE has 3 subwindows that provide a range of controls and methods for selecting an rgb combination. ICE also provides multiple methods of feedback to show the user the selected color. This version of ICE uses a color library I've written that sits on top of the pixwin color stuff. This color library is not built here but the source files are included, as well as a manpage. This version of ICE is a prototype for a more robust color editor, one that will allow the user to edit color space ranges, and save/load colormaps, etc. NAME: Barry A. This problem lasted for about three days, went away, came back for two days, then went away for three months, all without any specific action taken by me. I tried standard things like turning off the machine and rebooting, and rebuilding the kernel, but nothing bore on the problem. The problem is now back after being gone for three months. Cutting and pasting is not working, and CommandTool menus don't work. Has anyone had the same problems? Any suggestions? I'm desperate and not under Sun contract. [[ I later received this followup message: --wnl ]] The local Sun tech rep solved it - the problem is somehow produced by the network. We disconnected the machine from the network, and everything worked normally. The RPC used by the selection service must somehow be interacting with the network to produce the error. I hope that upgrading from OS 3.4 to 3.5 will cure the problem. Doug Lind, University of Washington Math. I went through SunView, SunCore and SunCGI manuals but I could not find out any chapter dedicate to the cooperation of SunView window environment and SunCore graphic package. There is no related, non-trivial examples either. Specifically, I would like to see how, for instance, view surface of SunCore is assigned to a subwindow of SunView so that SunCore application can run under SunView as if it ran alone. I hope you can give me a couple of real examples as well as some general guidance. Thank you. (Mr.) Jin, Youxuan Dept. Computer Science North Dakota State U. Our installation of Suns is an island in a DEC ocean. The campus is DEC through-and-through. Our research lab is made up of Suns, and we have home-brewed links over serial lines to the campus facilities (mostly for mail delivery and file transfers). We are considering getting DECNET for our network. I'm interested in experience others of you have had. We are interested in DECNET compatilibity for (a) faster/easier/more flexible mail delivery and file transfer, (b) better connections BOTH directions (SET HOST from the VAX -> Sun, as well as Sun -> VAX), and (c) wider access of peripherals BOTH directions (Sun users using VAX printers; VAX users using the Sun UUCP or laser printer). The VAXes do not (and will not, for reasons beyond my control) run TCP/IP. Hence, we are forced into making the Suns talk DECNET protocols. I'd be interested in any tips, pointers, or info I can get. Praises are great, but pitfalls are also valuable. We have sales info coming from Sun. Are there other implementations? Is all the above functionality possible, or are our goals too high? Thanks in advance.
