Here at NC State Univ, we are attempting to collect a large set of tests (and Ideas for tests) for validating a "UNIX". All of you who have ported UNIX to other machines or worked on extensive revisions: how did you test it? Do you have lists of bugs to be especially wary of AND some code or manual procedure to expose the bug? Are you aware of any related efforts to colect such tests? This is a particularly important problem as UNIX versions proliferate. The problem has existed with programming languages for years, and by far, the best solution to date is a "suite" of tests which expose conformance to the standard implicitly defined by the tests. The scope of the tests needed is vast, covering shell scripts, sys calls, c compilers (And preprocessors ...) utility programs, and even the shape and naming conventions of the file system. All input will be collated and a response posted with some summary and pointers if there is a good response. [Those who responded to a similary query to net.general a few months ago, please repeat. Our VAX was down for a month shortly after I made the request and I fear most were lost.) If you are concerned about the propriatary nature of the tests you are aware of, please respond with the name/phone number of a "boss" and I will negotiate with them. (we'll lose but i'll try.) ----GaryFostel---- (919) 737-2858 CSC Dept/NC State Univ./PO Box 5972/Raliegh NC 27650 ...decvax!duke!mcnc!ncsu!fostel
