How come I will > get these result? (Mail on clients not .forwarded if home dir mode = 700.) sendmail is running as root when it looks for a .forward file. The NFS server code maps userid 0 to -2 on incoming requests unless you patch the kernel to change that feature. Thus sendmail running on a client does not really have root access to files on the server. Hence it can't find .forward in a protected directory. If all clients are administered together, and you trust anyone who is root on any client to be root on the server (remember, a user can become root by aborting the machine and booting it single user!) then you can patch the kernel variable "_nobody" to be 0 instead of -2. Personally, I "exec" > suntools from my c-shell. --wnl ]] I don't know if later versions have it corrected, but in SunOS 3.4, if you "exec suntools" on a color 3/110, the next time you login you get some sort of selection_svc error and weird behavior on the cgfour (i.e., Prism) frame buffer. We asked Sun s/w support about it and they said to avoid doing "exec suntools" on a color 3/110. I don't know if the same applies to color 3/60s (they also use the Prism frame buffer). I found this bug when compiling my PostScript(-like) interpreter to the Sun 4 quite recently. A work-around is to use: cc -Dfloat=double to make everything double. It doesn't significantly increase memory usage or CPU time. You may also have to put the VARARGS fixes in that were posted sometime ago. Everytime I port my interpreter to a new machine, I find at least one compiler bug. A number of machines have compilers that are so badly broken that it would take a major effort to make PS work on them. Oddly, RISC chips seem to have been more prone to these problems. Floating point and structure passing tend to be the major offenders. - Crispin Goswell -- Name: Crispin Goswell |-------|-\ Informatics Department Usenet:{... | mcvax}!ukc!rlvd!caag | Tea | | Rutherford Appleton Lab JANET: caag@uk.ac.rl.inf \ Mug /_/ Chilton, Didcot ARPA: caag%inf.rl.ac.uk@nss.cs.ucl.ac.uk \_____/ Oxon OX11 0QX, UK ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Aug 88 15:47:28 EDT From: bob@allosaur.cis.ohio-state.edu (Bob Sutterfield) Subject: Re: Emacs Editor for Sun Reference: v6n171 In article <1988.08.08.00.19.28.999.00565@rice.edu> ssc-vax!dmg@beaver.cs.washington.edu (David Geary) writes: >From: ssc-vax!dmg@beaver.cs.washington.edu (David Geary) > >Does anyone know where I can get emacs for a Sun 3/60. [[ Mr. Campbell sent this in: it is an automatic response from the NIC describing how without ARPANet access can obtain RFCs. To get RFC 877 from the NIC send a message to SERVICE@SRI-NIC.ARPA with the command RFC 877 in the subject line of your message. Here is some information about using SERVICE. NIC Mail Services June 1988 This is an automated service provided by the DDN Network Information Center. It allows access to NIC documents and information via ordinary electronic mail. This is especially useful for people who do not have access to the NIC via a direct Internet link, such as BITNET, CSNET and UUCP sites. To use the mail service, send a mail message to SERVICE@SRI-NIC.ARPA. In the SUBJECT field, request the type of service you wish followed by any needed arguments. The message body is normally ignored. Large files will be broken into smaller separate messages. The information you request will be sent back to you as soon as possible. The following services are currently available: HELP This message; a list of current services. RFC nnn nnn is the RFC number or the word INDEX. IEN nnn nnn is the IEN number or the word INDEX. Sun Consulting Services (a part of Sun Customer Service) sells a generic SCSI driver called CONSULT-SIP, and the documentation needed to modify it. We are also available to do the modifications for you on a time and materials basis. In addition to the generic SCSI driver, we sell drivers for various floppy, WORM and CDROM drives. Consult Lisa Ventresca at 415-336-2438, or lisav@sun.com for information and datasheets. (We have other specials and services available too...) Now, for some generic comments on SCSI - Sun supports what it sells, but many drives are known to work. For devices other than tape or disk, you will probably require SIP to get started. Sun hasn't documented the lower level driver interface for SCSI host adaptors as it has been subject to change as we adapt to new drives and host adaptors - hence the CONSULT-SIP driver as a by-product of Consulting Services' porting effort. Considering that it requires no source license, and has 90% of what you need for most devices already done, it is quite a deal. l & h, kev PS: I am NOT a salesman, just one of the folks who wrote 'em. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Aug 88 15:10:08 edt From: harvard!ulowell!cg-atla!duane@cs.utexas.edu (Andrew Duane) Subject: Large kernel boot problems + fix In sun-spots of July 22, Joe Angelo talks about a problem with booting large kernels. I thought I would elaborate on the underlying problem, since we encountered and solved it ourselves. The problem is when (text+bss) > 0xA0000 (= 640K). This is the start address of the boot program as speicified in its a.out->a_entry field. If you have source, go into the directory /src/sun/sys/sunstand and change the BRELOC macro definition in Makefile.sun3 and rebuild boot. We use 0xB0000, which gives an extra 64K of space. This has been sufficient for our needs. If you do not have source, I suspect that a simple patch to the executable with adb would be enough. The BRELOC is only used to determine the entry point in the "ld" statement during build. BTW, there is supposed to be some checking for this during the boot procedure, but that checking seems to be broken. Probably an off-by-one error counting the required pages. This fix *WILL* allow use of GENERIC kernels, as it doesn't really change anything except what address the booter gets loaded at. I don't know what SUN did for their fix to affect this. This fix has been running here for some months now, without incident, but does not come with any sort of warranty. Andrew L.
