It certainly WAS a dog. The problem, so I was unofficially told by a Sun person, was that the Sun diag/setup utility lies about interleave: It accepts options to change the interleave but doesn't actually change the interleave in the controller. This means the format is done at interleave 2 which is just a touch too small for the contoller or cpu to keep up. We kept with it, because 1) we NEEDED the extra storage and 2) it was still faster to have root/swap/tmp on this slow disk than ND to the other 3/50+shoebox server.
