I have the unfortunate luck luck of being stuck with a TS11 tape drive on my 11/34. The big problem is that it doesn't seem to want to read tapes which it previously wrote. In particular, I have a heck of a time reading tar tapes which I just wrote! Tar gives a "directory checksum error" and then quits! I have not noticed this problem when reading tapes which were written on other systems. The quality of the tape seems to make a difference, but even Graham Epoch 480's fail about 50% of the time. Has anyone else seen this problem? DEC Field Service has been of no help, except to say that I should buy tape from them and that I should clean the heads after every couple of tapes (are they serious? Yes, and it seems to help!). Also, has anyone got a version of tar which attempts to recover from directory checksum errors? (My apologys if this has been covered before. We just came on the net.) Don Wegeng Thanks!
