I found that sun's 4.0 installation procedure left entries in the local password file for diskless machines with an entry for sysdiag with uid 0, but no root. This caused me no end of problems until I just threw in a root line above it. Deleting the sysdiag line would probably work as well. I'm running yp, or at least trying to.
