[comp.sys.sun] Sun announces "Won't support diskless 386i's"

olling@tcgould.tn.cornell.edu (Cliff Olling) (12/12/88)

Our sales rep told me this today, as I've been haranging him since July
about when would our 386i's show up (we intend to have them served by a
4/110). At the time of the order (July), there was no indication given to
us that we were ordering an unsupported configuration, even though this is
stated in the June 1988 "386i Advanced Administration" manual (which we
didn't see until our sole diskful 386i arrived in August). He didn't
mention anything at all about this until I asked him which tape I should
be using to install 386i clients on the 4/110 (This was a month after he
took our order and two months after the print date on the manual that says
this configuration is unsupported). He told us our machines wouldn't be
shipped until the 386i 4.0.1 release is ready.

So today he called to say that he can't ship our machines until we order
more memory or a disk for each one. He also told me of a new policy
whereby, all those outstanding memory add-on orders that everyone placed
to get their machines sooner will now be filled _after_ new orders for
machines with more than 4Mb!

Anyway, here's a form letter he sent us which will finally get us some
machines (remember nothing has arrived since July except the server and
the one diskful 386i).

Re: Changing our diskless 4 MB Sun386i order

This order is to be part of Sun sales order #____________, dated
___________. We wish to take advantage of Sun's special offer for
discounted 91 MB disk upgrades to our existing diskless 4 MB
Sun386i order. We understand that we have a choice of either:

     a) ADDING a 91 MB disk drive, RR133, we install, or

     b) CHANGING our diskless 4 MB Sun386i orders on backlog to a 91
MB disk configuration by adding -P9 to the end of the model
	numbers, disk drive factory installed.

We understand that this special discount is 50% off of the current
list price of $2,000 for a 91 MB disk drive. With either option a)
or b) above, our net price for the 91 MB disk drive is $1,000.

Please consider this a firm commitment to order the equipment
under (circle 1) option a or b above, per the attached quotation
#__________, in the amount of $___________, and authorizing you to
     build, ship and invoice.

We would like this equipment to be shipped no later than
12/31/88, and partials are acceptable. Sun standard terms and
conditions apply, and the terms are N30. The equipment is to be
shipped FOB factory, prepaid and charge.
