According to Sun Telemarketing, SunOS 4.0.1 for the 386i is being shipped to *all* current owners of 386i systems (not just those under warranty or maintenance support). 4.0.1 for the 386i is apparently a much more substantial update than it is for the 2's, 3's and 4's. I get the impression it fixes many of the bugs and problems that have been reported here (sun-spots) and elsewhere. I've had a chance to play with a machine running 4.0.1, and the performance of DOS windows is improved. Also Microsoft Windows seems to work reasonably well within a SunView window. In particular Windows is smart enough to take advantage of the full size of the SunView window it is running in (not just the tiny 25x80 window that most DOS applications must run in). There are many Windows-based applications (e.g. Excel) that look mighty nice on a 16" or 19" Sun hi-res. screen! I was told I should have my copy by Christmas (doesn't look like THAT will happen). If you don't have your copy yet you may want to call Sun and make sure it is on the way. - Glenn Roberts, The MITRE Corp., McLean VA (703)-883-6820 gfr%wolfgang@gateway.mitre.org
