i recently received a sun 3/60... i first attempted to install SunOS without reading any manuals, naturally. i'm not really a novice at this stuff... or so i thought... i got some sort of boot error... so i read the plethora of "read me first" documents. one said to be sure that the boot tape was NOT write protected, if you have a certain kind of tape drive. so i unprotect the tape... boot is successful. next step -- format the 327M disk. the instructions for this step conclude with "tar -cvf defects.whatever". i thought this would write the defects file onto the end of the boot tape. wrong! bye bye boot tape... now i know what "tar -c" does... that's the last time i read the SunOS installation manual... i should have known better... please keep the condescending email to a minimum, folks! i thought you all might get a laugh out of this... now i get to see how fast Sun can respond to my request for software assistance... this ought to be interesting... (i'll probably get a loaner tape from my salesman some day soon.)
