FrameMaker's Internal Resolution Recently, there has been some confusion about FrameMaker's resolution. To summarize, Richard Foulk, at the University of Hawaii wrote a program to plot wave forms using Frame's Maker Interchange Format, (MIF). The problem he encountered was that the coordinates he specified for waves were rounded to the nearest point. This is a known limitation of FrameMaker 1.3 MIF language. It stores *coordinates*, such as end points of a line, using a resolution of 1/72" (1 point). While the end points of a line are limited to 1 pt resolution, FrameMaker prints the line at the printer's resolution, that is a full 300 dpi. Thus, Richard's reported problems were not the result of Frame printing at less than 300 dpi, rather they were the result of coordinates being rounded to the nearest point. Frame intends to address this issue by enhancing the internal resolution to 1/65536pt in our next major release. This solves the problem reported by Richard. The bottom line is that Frame's graphics tools in version 1.3 are perhaps not well suited for plotting wave forms, but we're working on it and appreciate the concern people have shown on Sun-Spots. I hope this information helps. If you have any other questions about Frame or any of it's products, please feel free to write to {sun, ames}!frame!comments. Mike Takamoto Frame Technical Support Team
