[comp.sys.sun] Extabyte gotcha--expensive problem!

dbd%benden@lanl.gov (Dan Davison) (01/13/89)

Our first Extabyte 8mm drive bit the dust just before Christmas. We
received it July of '89. The replacement drive arrived, from Artecon, and
wouldn't work. Interestingly, the newer 8mm drive ***will not work with
the sc0 driver***. The sc0 driver is the one that the SCSI-2 host adapter
talks with. The SCSI-3 uses si0. To get the new 8mm drive to work, we
had to replac our SCSI-2 with a SCSI-3, which was about $1800.

The new Artecon manual states explicitly that the 8mm drive "will not work
with the old sc0 driver". Hmmmm. Our 4/280 which arrived last summer has
a SCSI-2 adapter in it. Be careful!

Anyone care to speculate what the change was & why they bothered? (To
make money for Sun?)

Also, be aware the the directions for patching the Sun OS 4.0 st.o *are
not needed* if you are running 4.0.1--the change is already there.

Of course, after working for one day, the replacement drive has died.
Talk about infant mortality!
