I manage a network of 11 Sun 386i machines that support approximately 200 users, both student and staff. According to the upgrade documentation, I'm going to have to reenter the account information for 200 accounts via SNAP and they're going to have to reenter their passwords. First off, last I checked SNAP could barely handle three accounts, much less two hundred. Secondly, that's a lot of typing, no matter how reliable SNAP is. Will I break anything if I just restore /etc/passwd, /etc/auto.home, and the like from tape and remake the YP server? More importantly, what is going on in the upgrade that trashes all of the account information? There appears to be an unreasonable amount of "print out the XXX file and reenter it by hand when you reconfigure the system after the upgrade." Is there a way to do this upgrade more efficiently, and more quickly? -David Kovar Technical Consultant Harvard University kovar@husc4.harvard.edu
