Help, We are trying to install our first diskless Sun 4/110 under 4.0. The net we are installing it on has an existing Sun 4/280 running 4.0, a Sun 3/180 running 3.4, and several 3/60's all running 3.4. There are also a number of HP9000's on the same net. Everything works fine until the diskless 4/110 tries to start init (i.e. it mounts the files systems, finds /vmunix, etc. ) at that point we get the error failed to invoke init, error 2 panic: icode and then the machine tries to dump on the swap area, fails the dump, and then tries to reboot. I have checked that init is in /sbin/init and is identical to that in /sbin on the 4/280 server. Any ideas how to get a handle on this ? Rick McGonegal sysrick@cfht.hawaii.edu

I ran into this problem under 3.5. It may be related. The problem I had was that I was trying to boot a diskful 3/260 (its root and swap were on nd on the file server) off a generic kernel (you know - swap generic). The generic kernel evidently makes certain assumptions if it finds a local sd or xy device. Changing the swap and root entry in the kernel fix the problem. I suggest checking your kernel config file, etc. as a place to start. On advice from Sun, I spent quite a bit of time checking for corrupted filesystems, etc. Dinah Anderson Shell Oil Company, Information Center (713) 795-3287 ...!{sun,psuvax,soma,rice,ut-sally,ihnp4}!shell!dinah
